About five months after the first Corona vaccination programs began, the number of doses administered has surpassed one billion.
According to a count by the AFP news agency based on official data, just over 1.002 billion syringes of Corona vaccine had been injected worldwide by Saturday evening. More than half of these are in the three countries of the United States, China and India.
In terms of population, Israel is in the lead, with nearly one in six already vaccinated. It is followed by the United Arab Emirates with 51 percent of the population, the United Kingdom with 49 percent and the United States with 42 percent.
Two million Austrians vaccinated against Corona
In the EU, 128 million doses of vaccine have been administered to date, and the EU-wide vaccination rate is 21 percent. The EU leader is Malta, where 47 percent of residents have already been vaccinated, followed by Hungary with 37 percent. In Austria, 2.761 million vaccine doses have been administered up to and including Friday. Just under two million people, or 22.5 percent of the population, have received at least one vaccine dose.
Although – mainly thanks to the international Covax initiative – vaccination campaigns have now also begun in most poor countries, vaccination has so far been primarily a privilege of rich countries. Defined by the World Bank as high-income countries, they collectively account for 16 percent of the world’s population, but have administered 47 percent of the vaccine doses. Corona vaccinations have yet to begin in 12 countries.
EU strikes mega vaccine deal with BioNTech/Pfizer
Most widely used is the vaccine made by British-Swedish group Astrazeneca, which is particularly cheap and easy to use. It has been administered in two-thirds of the 207 states and territories covered. The Biontech/Pfizer vaccine was used in 44 percent of the countries.
